Posted on 18 July 2008 Afesis-corplan is currently facilitating a Community Based Financial Accountability (CBFA) project with two municipalities in the Eastern Cape, one in Queenstown and the other in Grahamstown. On 15 July 2008, Nontando Guwa and Gugu Mgwebi visited Lukanji Municipality to present the working group to the local municipality. On 16 and 17 July, Simpiwe Madobela joined Gugu Mgwebi to host a two-day workshop with the Makana CBFA working group. The workshop aimed to capacitate the civil society members with the relevant tools as per legislation when monitoring financial accountability within their local municipalities.
Posted on 14 July 2008 Afesis-corplan and the Project for Conflict Resolution and Development (PCRD) are organising a regional Good Governance Learning Network (GGLN) event on the topic "Towards Municipal Transparency: Advancing Pro-poor Information Dissemination" to be held on 15 August 2008. The aim of the learning event is to find ways in which information can be disseminated effectively by municipalities to previously disadvantaged communities. Participants will include GGLN members, Eastern Cape NGO Coalition members, broader civil society, Municipal Officials from Nelson Mandela Metro and Buffalo City Municipality, Blue Crane Route Ward Committee members and Academics from Rhodes University (PSAM) and the University of Fort Hare.
Posted on 09 July 2008 Afesis-corplan is currently rolling out the expanded Ward Key Performance Indicators (WKPI) project in Amahlathi Municipality in Stutterheim. On Monday and Tuesday Bonginkosi Masiwa facilitated the training of members from three ward committees on how to participate in the Performance Management System (PMS) of their municipality. On Thursday and Friday he will be in the remote area of Tsomo training a cluster of three ward committees. A Train-the-Trainer programme targeted at Community Development Workers (CDWs) is planned for next week.
Posted on 08 July 2008 Nangamso Magadla and Simpiwe Madobela are training fifty-five participants in Bedford from 07 to 10 July 2008. The workshop focuses on Organisational Strengths and is the first of four training events planned as part of the capacity-building programme in Nxuba Local Municipality.The other three events will cover Financial Management, Human Resources & Administration and Project Management.

Posted on 02 July 2008 The Good Governance Learning Network (GGLN) Reference Group met at the Isandla Institute in Cape Town for a strategic planning exercise yesterday. Peter Kimemia of Afesis-corplan was present as was Jaap de Visser, Terence Smith, Ismail Davids, Mpume Shezi and Mirjam van Donk. Discussions covered a range of issues around the context, purpose, activities and the institutional arrangements within the network. This will be taken up further with the broader membership so that the final document reflects a concerted plan for the future.
Posted on 01 July 2008 Simpiwe Madobela facilitated a workshop with ward committee members in Nxuba Municipality yesterday.The purpose of the meeting was to get feedback from participants on how they are progressing with their assignments as part of the Ward Key Performance Indicators (WKPI) project.
Posted on 25 June 2008 Frederick Kusambiza and Peter Kimemia are attending a meeting at the offices of the Royal Danish Embassy (RDE) in Pretoria today. Discussions will focus on the progress of the Community-Based Financial Accountability (CBFA) project as well as the planning of the new Anti-corruption Programme.
Posted on 19 June 2008 Afesis-corplan with support from the GTZ has developed a civil society tool for assessing and monitoring good governance practice at the local level. The tool, known as the Good Governance Survey (GGS) is available to municipalities to use as a self-assessment instrument. Idasa in partnership with Pact and Netherland Development Organisation has also developed a tool, the Local Governance Barometer (LGB) to measure the level of governance in municipalities. On 20 June 2008, Afesis-corplan and Idasa will meet in Pretoria to share information around the use of the two assessment tools.

Posted on 18 June 2008 Nangamso Magadla is facilitating a training workshop for forty-five members of community-based organisations as part of the capacity-building programme in Dimbaza from 17 to 20 June 2008. The training focuses on 'Organisational Strengths' and aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills about the different types of businesses, the legal implications of each, starting a business, the role of the executive committee and the chairperson of an organisation and its constitution.
Posted on 10 June 2008 As part of National Youth Month activities, Afesis-corplan is hosting a seminar on "The Role of Youth in Local Governance and Development". The event takes place on Friday, 13 June 2008 at the Health Resource Centre in East London. The aim is to bring various stakeholders together to deliberate how youth development issues can best be mainstreamed, particularly in the Eastern Cape. Speakers include representatives from the Usobomvu Youth Fund, EC Youth Commission, University of Fort Hare and Buffalo City Municipality. Click here to confirm your attendance.
Posted on 09 June 2008 Nangamso Magadla and Gugu Mgwebi are meeting with the working group of the Community Based Financial Accountability (CBFA) project in Queenstown on 11 June 2008. The purpose of the meeting is to plan how to approach the municipality when dealing with financial accountability as per the legislative framework.
Posted on 09 June 2008 Nontando Guwa and Simpiwe Madobela are training municipal officials, community members and DBSA representatives on a Community Based Planning (CBP) methodology in Mthatha on 10 and 11 June 2008. The workshop includes a community meeting and practical exercise at the Rotary Hall in Ngangelizwe. Approximately 200 community members are expected to attend.
Posted on 04 June 2008 Frederick Kusambiza and Nangamso Magadla are attending a meeting organised by the National Development Agency (NDA) on 06 June 2008. This is a follow up to the National Capacity Building Learning Forum held in Johannesburg earlier this year. The purpose of the meeting is to share experiences in the implementation of the community-based programme. Participants will be given the opportunity to reflect on the objectives of the programme, identify challenges and develop strategies for dealing with them.
