Sustainable Settlements

The purpose of the Sustainable Settlements Programme is to promote a sustainable and integrated approach to settlement development by giving technical support so that:

  • Communities have access to land and basic services.
  • Integrated housing development models are tested in various contexts.
  • Development practitioners have a better understanding of how integrated development can be applied.
  • Government and other role-players support integrated development.
  • Communities use co-operative housing as one of the approaches to address their habitable livelihood needs.
  • Co-operative institutions manage development and maintenance of their settlements effectively.

The Sustainable Settlements Programme has acquired expertise in developing approaches that deal with building sustainable community settlements and institutions that augment local economic initiatives. One of the main aims of the programme is to promote innovative housing approaches using lessons learnt from pilot projects.
