Settlement staff attend Housing Indaba

Ronald Eglin and Sarojini Moodley attended the Provincial Housing Indaba at the Fish River Sun on 23 and 24 October 2006. In an unscheduled speech at the Indaba, Eastern Cape Premier Balindlela announced that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Traditional Affairs is to be two separate departments, but both will still remain under MEC Sam Kwelita. Housing Minister Sisulu emphasised the importance of land as a resource for housing.She indicated that the Eastern Cape is "drowning in its backlog" of about 794 000 houses and urged local government to attract members from the private sector and communities to get involved in addressing the housing challenge in the province.

Farewell for Natasha August, Administrator

Afesis-corplan staff met at lunchtime today to thank Natasha for the contribution she has made to the organisation over the past 12 years and to wish her all the best in her new job. We're going to miss you Natasha!

PHP Working Group to meet with National Department of Housing

Sustainable Settlements Coordinator Ronald Eglin will be joining a working group of NGO's involved in the People's Housing Process (PHP) for discussions with the National Department of Housing in Cape Town on the 17 October 2006. The main objective of the meeting is to consider the future of PHP, in particular to agree on a procedure for reviewing the PHP policy. This is a follow-up from a meeting held in early 2006 with the Department.

Farewell for Caroline Naude

Staff and Management held a farewell on 3 October 2006 for one of our Directors, Caroline Naude. Caroline is off to Zanzibar on a two-year work contract. With her vast experience gained in development NGOs, Caroline played an active role on the Board since July 2005. Caroline has resigned as a Director, but has agreed to be retained as a Member of the Board. We wish her well in her new venture.

Meeting with Royal Danish Embassy

Frederick Kusambiza and Glenn Hollands will be meeting with donor partner RDE in Pretoria on the 17 October 2006. In a continuation of the meeting held at the end of last month, programme activities and future funding will be discussed.
