Vacancy for position of Researcher

Afesis-corplan currently requires a competent and suitably skilled person to fill the post of researcher in the Local Government Unit. Closing date for applications is 8 December 2006.

Donor partner RDE is to meet with Afesis-corplan on the 27 November 2006 at the Regent Hotel. The Local Government Transformation Programme's work on Ward Key Performance Indicators is under review.
Construction underway

Construction on our new office extension is due to be completed early in 2007. The extension will allow for more office space as well as a new resource centre for Afesis-corplan staff.
Participating in ETDP SETA Skills Programmes

Afesis-corplan staff members will benefit from stuctured learning programmes offered by the Education, Training and Development Practices (ETDP) Sector Education Training Authority (SETA) over the next couple of months.This week Sarojini Moodley and Peter Kimemia will attend the Skills Programme in Project Management.

Local government researcher to attend colloquium

Simpiwe Seti will be attending a colloquium entitled "The place of participation in a democratising South Africa: decentralisation, local councillors and civil society in post-apartheid cities" on 20 and 21 November 2006. The event will be held at Wits in Johannesburg and is organised by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the French Institute for South Africa (IFAS) and the Wits Centre for Urban and Built Environment Studies (CUBES).
Transformer Celebration

Staff and guests celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Local Government Transformer at a special evening gathering at Dolphin View Lodge on 14 November 2006. Cocktail snacks and drinks were enjoyed in the restaurant followed by a talk by Rod Amner on "Media and Transformation: Theorising the role of the Local Government Transformer in a young democracy".

Promoting Housing Co-operatives

Mthe Pobana and Ronald Eglin met with ward 19 of Mhlontlo Municipality just outside Qumbu in the former Transkei yesterday to give a presentation on housing co-operatives. The community already has a food co-operative and an agricultural co-operative and wanted more information from Afesis-corplan on how a housing co-operative works. South African Conference: Local Governance and Corruption

Afesis-corplan in collaboration with Mbumba Development Services and WEDC will be hosting a conference on local governance and corruption on the 29 and 30 November at Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve. The aim of the conference is to further understand the impact of corruption on local governance and the efficacy of both state-led and civil society interventions to combat corruption. The conference will also provide an opportunity to overview international patterns in this regard and to consider case studies from other countries that offer useful lessons and best practices in addressing corruption. Attendance is by invitation only.
